Painting Your Home:  The Power of Planning
Painting a room is one of the quickest and easiest ways of making your new house into a home. Yet choosing colors isn't always an easy job. Bold, interesting color adds character to a room, but be careful not to overdo it. Here are some simple tips to keep in mind when choosing colors for your new home:
Plan ahead: Think about the colors of your furniture (both furniture you have, and furniture you'd plan to buy in the future), the colors of adjoining rooms, and the rugs of flooring you plan to have in the room. All these elements work together to give space life and feeling. Be sure to think ahead to the end of your project to make sure that you'll be happy with your color choice months or years down the road.
Bring it home: Bring the color samples (or even a small can) home and test it out. Remember, a whole wall full of color can look much different than a 1x2" chip. Look at the color at different times of day, and next to other key elements in your home.
Choosing the Right Paint: Color isn't everything. If you're painting a high traffic area, have children, or are may have kids in the future, consider getting 'easy-clean' paint with a semi-gloss finish.

Get Advice: If you're unsure, get advice. Your local paint store is a great place to start. Some have take-home color-guides and on-line tools, in addition to helpful local staff.
Trust Yourself: Advice is always helpful, but it's your home. Trust yourself and your family. After all, you'll need to live with your choices for years to come.

If you've just moved into a new home, or are fixing up your old one, finding the right contractor is important. Here are some tips for choosing the right painter:

PRICE:  Shop around.  If a contractor is especially busy, they may tend to 'bid high'.  If they're not busy, you're likely to get a better price.  While price is important, it shouldn't be your only consideration.
SCHEDULE: Depending on how busy the contractor is, scheduling may be an issue.  Are you in a hurry?  Or can the project wait?
PROJECT SPECS:  How much do you know about the project specifications?  If you know exactly what you want, and can convey this accurately to the contractor, the price you end up paying is likely to be be close to your estimate.  However, if don't quite know what you want, your estimate may may not be near your final price.  If you think you need help finishing the design specs, be sure that you choose a contractor that you can work with.  If you can't communicate well, the project may not come out the way you planned.
REPUTATION:  It's important that your project turns out well.  While choosing an especially well-known contractor can help ensure that the job is done right, it's no guarantee.  And you may pay a premium for the name.  Before hiring someone, be sure to meet them and ask for references.  Even if you don't end up talking to the references, it's important to know that there are customers that are willing to talk about their experiences.
